London International Afghan Film Festival: New Narratives and Changing the World’s View of Afghanistan

The London International Afghan Film Festival, 1st and 2nd held in 2014 and 2016, played a significant role in changing the world’s perception of Afghanistan at the time. By showcasing a diverse selection of short documentaries and fiction films from Afghanistan narrated by women and independent filmmakers, the festival not only showcased the culture of a land, the untold stories and emerging talents of Afghan cinema, but also helped change the stereotypical image of the country, which is often tied to war and crisis.
By presenting powerful narratives of hope, resistance and social change, young Afghan filmmakers offered a global audience a fresh perspective on life and creativity in Afghanistan. The festival also provided an opportunity for Afghan artists to interact with international audiences and fostered cultural dialogue between Afghanistan and the world.
Holding this event was an effective step towards introducing Afghan cinema to the world and presenting a more realistic and diverse image of the country to the world. The jury committee awarded prizes to the best films of the festival, and film buyers from London purchased the best films.
